There is a saying in Morocco that a piece of wood is not ready for decorative use – whether as a door, ceiling panel or table top – until it has been painted. This is certainly true for the zawwaga who work at our ateliers in Tangier and Fes. Specialists in the ancient wood-painting craft of zouaq, these artisans work with brushes of fine donkey hair to create beautiful floral arabesques or geometric designs built around stars of eight, twelve or sixteen points.
